Types of school starting with J

Junior High School (1930-1976)

A separate secondary school which emerged in 1930 offering junior secondary education only. From 1961 the designation Junior High School was also used for the remaining secondary departments in metropolitan Central Schools which until the introduction of comprehensive education had offered home science or junior technical courses.

Junior Technical School (1913-1962)

A school department or a separate school combining general post-primary education with technical training for boys expected to enter a skilled trade. The vocational subjects included drawing, woodwork, metalwork, etc. Junior technical courses were taught in Superior Public Schools from 1913, in other super primary schools and in Evening Continuation Schools. From 1923 separate Central Junior Technical Schools were established, drawing their pupils from boys who had completed their primary education at schools in the surrounding district. In accordance with the general educational trend, these were gradually converted to comprehensive High Schools, the last ones becoming Boys Junior High Schools in 1962; the remaining junior technical departments in super-primary schools were converted at the same time.
